The unkno-jvn sand i3 a much lighter color, expecially a fter the fine powder is sifted out of it*. . This fine powder is chiefly thorite (ThOv,) and constitutes 5 to 10 percent of the sample and also gives to ita low radioactivity* After removing the powder the remainder of the unknown sample "was hand picked to give an opaoua portion constituting less than a tenth of the total loaving nlmoat pure silica (SiO9). The above analysis indicates that this opaque portion does not contain any thorium. The x-ray shows it to be silica, SiOp; hsmatite, F^^s; and a feldspar group, anorthoclase, (Na K) ALSi303 probably with Copied 19-11-48 1 '''''''''''''''' ."/
